        1. There's been a lot of really good discussion & criticism around Signal's new PIN and SVR features, particularly in matthew_d_green's article: blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2020/07/10/a-few-thoughts-about-signals-secure-value-recovery/ 1/4

The points raised in the article about Signal PIN & SVR and other similar discussions are good and valid. I'm not disagreeing but do want to add a relevant point that seems often omitted: Signal is both an app *and* an ecosystem. 2/4

The more adoption Signal can have the more your communication is protected because more of your communication is happening over Signal as opposed to SMS/email/Slack. Signal has to made tough tradeoff decisions not just based on it's app's users but on the ecosystem. 3/4

The decisions around Signal SVR encourage general adoption. I might prefer no SVR in general, however I would prefer that more of my conversations happen over Signal with SVR, than over another medium because the lack of SVR prevented adoption. blog.eldrid.ge/2020/07/14/discussions-of-signal-svr-should-consider-network-effects/ 4/4
